Hotel Indigo Galápagos Review

A Design-Forward Stay on San Cristóbal Island

This review is independent and not sponsored

I personally stayed at this property and covered the stay independently, and this article reflects my experience with complete honesty.

The Hotel Indigo Galapagos by IHG

GOWITHROMEO RATING: 8.6/10
AVG. NIGHTLY RATE: $600

Hotel Indigo Galapagos is one of the most unique stays in the Galápagos. It’s the only internationally branded hotel on San Cristóbal and one of the very few places in the islands where you can use loyalty points. But what stood out to me wasn’t just the branding, it was how intentional the design, location, and overall experience felt from the moment I arrived. This is not a traditional Galápagos stay. It feels more elevated, more curated, and honestly, more comfortable than most options in the islands.

LOCATION

9/10

The location is one of the biggest strengths of this hotel. It’s just five minutes from the airport, which makes arrival incredibly easy. I landed and was in my room within minutes, no long transfers, no stress. That alone changes the experience in a place like the Galápagos.

The hotel sits directly on the waterfront in the center of town. Everything is walkable. Restaurants, shops, tour operators, all right outside.

What makes it even more special is the wildlife. Sea lions are literally everywhere. They rest on the beach in front of the hotel, they sleep on the sidewalks, they take over the boardwalk. You don’t need a tour to start seeing wildlife. It’s already happening around you.

AMENITIES

7.8/10

GYM 7/10 The gym is small and straightforward. It has an all-in-one machine, a set of free weights, two treadmills, and one bike. I used it a couple of times during my stay, and while it’s not designed for serious training or heavy lifting, it worked well enough for a basic workout. It felt more like a functional space to stay active rather than a full fitness experience, but for this destination, it did the job.

SPA - 7.5/10 There’s a small wellness and meditation area that feels quiet and tucked away. It’s not a full destination spa, but it fits the pace of the island and gives you space to slow down.

POOLS - 9/10 The rooftop pool overlooks the ocean and feels like a proper escape after long days exploring the islands. It’s not massive, but it’s well designed and rarely felt crowded. There’s also a jacuzzi next to the pool, which I ended up using more than I expected.

OTHER The hotel is small, only 35 rooms, and that makes a noticeable difference. Service felt personal throughout my stay, staff remembered me, and it never felt like a large or impersonal operation. There’s also an elevator, which is rare in the Galápagos, and the hotel is well designed for accessibility. The hotel has an on-site restaurant and bar, which are convenient, especially after long days of exploring. I did find the restaurant a bit pricey for what it offers, but it’s still a comfortable option when you don’t feel like going out.

ROOM

9/10

The rooms are one of the highlights. Floor-to-ceiling windows open up to the ocean, and the natural light makes the space feel alive throughout the day. I spent time just sitting there watching the beach and the sea lions.

The design is clearly intentional. Natural textures, soft colors, and subtle references to the islands are everywhere. Even the lighting fixtures are inspired by tortoise shells.

The bathroom continues that same concept. There’s a glass panel in the shower that lets you see outside while you’re bathing, which sounds unusual but actually feels very connected to the environment. If you want privacy, it’s one button away. It felt modern, clean, and well thought out, which is not something you always find in the Galápagos.

BREAKFAST

Breakfast wasn’t included in my stay, and at around $25 per person, it felt a bit expensive, especially based on the reviews I had seen beforehand. Because of that, I ended up having breakfast outside the hotel most mornings.

RESTAURANTS NEARBY

If you’re looking for good food in walking distance, here are some Eat My Critique approved options:

Darwin’s Secret (On-site) – The hotel’s main restaurant. Ecuadorian and international dishes done well.

Waterfront Restaurants (2–5 minutes) – The boardwalk right outside the hotel has several casual spots serving fresh seafood, cocktails, and local dishes. Easy, relaxed, and perfect after a day of excursions.

Local Cafés in Town (5–10 minutes) – Small, simple spots where you can grab coffee, snacks, or light meals while exploring San Cristóbal.

THINGS TO DO

Kicker Rock Tour (Boat Excursion) – One of the most iconic experiences in the Galápagos. Snorkeling here was one of the highlights of my trip.

Walk the Waterfront (Steps Away) – Sea lions, pelicans, marine iguanas, all visible without leaving town.

Playa Mann (10 minutes) – A calm beach where you can swim alongside sea lions in a more relaxed setting.

VERDICT

Hotel Indigo Galápagos exceeded my expectations. In a destination where hotels are often simple and functional, this felt intentional, designed, and comfortable in a way that elevated the entire trip. The location is unbeatable, the rooms are well thought out, and the overall experience feels more polished than most options in the islands.

It’s not the cheapest option, but in the context of the Galápagos, it offers strong value for what you get. If you want a stay that feels modern, easy, and connected to the environment without sacrificing comfort, this is one of the best choices on San Cristóbal.

And waking up to sea lions right outside your window? That alone is worth it.
