When most travelers think of Indonesia, Bali immediately comes to mind. But on our journey through the country, Elliot and I discovered a destination that feels even more extraordinary: Komodo Island. This place is a reminder that Indonesia is far more than one island, it’s a world of natural wonders waiting to be explored.
Where We Stayed: Ta’aktana Labuan Bajo
We stayed at Ta’aktana Luxury Collection Resort & Spa in Labuan Bajo, and it was extraordinary. Overlooking the Flores Sea with views that felt straight out of the Maldives, the resort combined modern luxury with thoughtful local design. It features two beautiful pools, including a lap pool and a lower resort pool, as well as a state-of-the-art gym, a serene spa, a library, and even its own coffee roastery. Breakfast was impeccable, the restaurant served excellent meals throughout the day, and every detail felt carefully considered.
The service was warm, personal, and attentive, making us feel at home from the moment we arrived. Staying here elevated our Komodo trip into something unforgettable.
Meeting the Komodo Dragons
No trip to Indonesia is complete without encountering its most famous residents: the Komodo dragons. They are the largest living lizards on Earth, growing up to 10 feet long and found only on a few Indonesian islands, including Komodo. Often called “living dinosaurs,” they’ve roamed the planet for millions of years. These powerful predators feed on deer, wild boar, and even water buffalo, using venom in their saliva that prevents blood clotting. We joined a day trip from Labuan Bajo into Komodo National Park, where expert rangers guided us through the landscapes these prehistoric giants call home. Seeing them in their natural habitat was thrilling, a once-in-a-lifetime experience that reminded us why this island is so unique.
The Beauty of Pink Beach
Another unforgettable stop was the famous Pink Beach, one of only a handful of pink-sand beaches in the world. Its rare blush color comes from tiny fragments of red coral mixing with the white sand, creating a shoreline that looks almost unreal. Swimming in the crystal-clear waters, snorkeling among vibrant marine life, and simply standing on this extraordinary beach felt like experiencing something truly surreal.
Hiking Padar Island
I couldn’t leave Komodo without hiking Padar Island, famous for its dramatic views. The trail is steep but straightforward, and it takes approximately an hour to reach the top and return. When I went, it was crowded, so I’d recommend starting early in the morning for a quieter experience. Even without sunrise or sunset, the panorama was unforgettable. Turquoise bays, rugged hills, and scattered islands stretching across the sea. It’s one of the most photogenic places in Indonesia, where every picture looks like a postcard.
Plan Your Own Komodo Adventure
If you’re planning a trip to Indonesia, don’t stop at Bali. Komodo Island is a must, with wildlife encounters, pink beaches, and dramatic landscapes you won’t find anywhere else.
I have firsthand experience here and would love to share what with you my favorite places to stay, where to eat, and the tours that make it special. If you’re thinking about going, feel free to send me a message and we can talk about how to make your trip unforgettable.
Final Thoughts
Komodo Island surprised me at every turn. Between the thrill of seeing Komodo dragons up close, the serenity of Pink Beach, and the panoramic beauty of Padar, this destination gave us memories we’ll cherish forever. Staying at Ta’aktana Labuan Bajo made it even more special, with its perfect location and stunning views.
If Indonesia is on your travel list, make sure Komodo Island is part of your journey. It’s an experience that will stay with you long after you leave.
